Elmer’s Trip to Tanzania

After 2 flights, one 14 hours the other 5 hours with an 8 hour layover in Doha Qatar, we finally arrived in Kilamenjaro Tanzania on Tuesday. Im traveling with tye Seattle Limbo Sister City group delivering much needed training on the menstrual cycle and menstruation kits to school girls and education on the same subject to boys. Of the 15 people in our group there are 3 of us men working with the women to teach the boys. The women have been doing this for many years and is the brainchild of LueRachelle Brim-Atkins who’s vision has led her to travel to Africa for the past 17 years doing g this work. Here are a few photos with more to come as we have been to a rain Forrest and coffee farm so far with a safari and trip to the serengetti to follow.
Began the 3 day safari on the Conservation Preserve and the Serengeti earlier this week. The difference between the two is that humans can live on the Preserve, only the Masai, who herd their cattle and live in Bomas, while the Serengeti contains only the animals in the wild. The Preserve is in a volcanic crater, Gorangoro, which was formed millions of years ago and the Masai have lived there for centuries. They maintain their lifestyle and traditions and are polygamous with men having many wives, each wife having their own home. We visited a Boma and danced with the Masai and interacted with them before going out in the bush. Enjoy the photos. It was spectacular.
On Saturday we visited the Panther Compoud established by Pete and Charlotte O’Neil here in Arusha. They were given land over 40 years ago. Pete was the founder of the Kansas City Chapter of the BPP in 68 and went into exile in 1970 after being framed up. He and Charlotte landed in our International Section in Algeria before moving to Tanzania. It was great to see them and share stories. Their Cultural Center provides learning to kids and villagers and has a dorm for kids who need a place to stay as well as apartments for visitors.
